Cucchiello's Bakery: The End of an Era

January 31, 2017 by William Charleton in Boston, Restaurant Reviews

Let me warn you, this is a slightly sad post.  It’s a review of a place that’s going out of business.  It’s this bakery in East Boston called Cucchiello’s Bakery (356 Bennington St, East Boston, MA 02128).  My friend scoped this place out while on a run and wanted to check it out.  So we did!  We walk in and it’s essentially just a big kitchen.  A big, super Italian, kitchen.

So many cookies and pastries and bread.  I wasn’t going to get anything, but the kid working there started telling us that they’re closing!  Apparently, the building was sold and the new owner would rather have a Dunkin’ Donuts in there.  The opposite of gentrification, if you ask me.  When we checked out Terminal J next door, the waitress told us Cucchiello’s had been there for 70 years!  She said they supply bread to most of the restaurants, and that their closing is posing a problem!

I got a cider donut for 50 cents.  How could I not.  And it was good!  They had pizzelles too, but they were only sold in quantities greater than I wanted.  Remember, every dollar spent is a vote cast.  Support this family owned local business as long as you can, and skip D&D.
